وقال مايكل باكارد إنه كان يغوص عندما ابتلعه الحوت ووجد نفسه داخل فمه العملاق لحوالي 30-40 ثانية قبالة بروفينستاون في ولاية ماساتشوستس.
ولفظ الحوت الضخم باكارد ولم يصب بسوء إلا اشتباه في خلع في الركبة.
وعلى الرغم من مناشدات زوجته للحصول على وظيفة أخرى، إلا أن باكارد لا يخطط للتخلي عن 40 عامًا من حياته المهنية في الغوص لصيد السلطعون قبالة كيب كود.
ويمكن أن تنمو الحيتان الحدباء حتى يصل طولها إلى 50 قدمًا (15 مترًا) وتزن حوالي 36 طنًا. وفقًا للصندوق العالمي للحياة البرية، يبلغ عدد الحيتان الحدباء حول العالم حوالي ستين ألفا.
وقال باكارد، 56 عامًا، لصحيفة كيب كود تايمز إنه وزميله استقلوا قاربهم صباح الجمعة في أحوال جوية وبحرية ممتازة، ورؤية تمتد إلى 20 قدما.
وقال إنه بعد أن قفز من السفينة مرتديًا معدات الغوص في الماء، “شعرت بارتطام ضخم ثم أظلم كل شيء”.
وكان باكارد يعتقد أنه تعرض للهجوم من قبل أحد أسماك القرش البيضاء الكبيرة التي تسبح في المنطقة، “ثم تحسست ما حولي وأدركت أنه لا توجد أسنان”.

وأشار باكارد إنه آنذاك فكر في زوجته وابنيه الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين 12 و 15 عامًا.
وأضاف “وإذ فجأة صعد الحوت إلى السطح وفتح فاه وبدأ يهز رأسه”. ثم قذف بي في الهواء وسقطت في الماء. أصبحت حرًا وأطفو في المياه. لم أصدق أنني نجوت … وأنني هنا الآن لأقص عليكم ما حدث”.
ثم لاحظ زميله في القارب، الذي كان يمسح المياه بحثًا عن باكاراد مسترشدا بفقاعات الهواء المنبعثة من جهاز الأكسجين الخاص به، وسحبه إلى الأمان.
وأكدت إدارة مكافحة الحرائق في بروفينستاون أنها استجابت لمكالمة الساعة 08:15 بالتوقيت المحلي (12:15 بتوقيت جرينتش) لمساعدة صياد جريح على شاطئ بروفينستاون.
وأجرى الصحفيون مقابلة مع باكارد حول محنته التوراتية بعد خروجه من مستشفى كيب كود في هيانيس.
وتميل الحيتان الحدباء إلى التغذية عن طريق فتح فمها على مصراعيها لابتلاع أكبر قدر ممكن من الفرائس، مثل الأسماك، مما دفع علماء البحار إلى التكهن بأن ما حدث لباكارد كان على الأرجح أمرا عرضيًا بحتًا.
وقال أحد الخبراء لصحيفة كيب كود تايمز إنه من غير المعروف عمليا أن يبتلع حوت إنسانًا.
