أفادت دراسة جديدة نشرها يوم الأربعاء معهد الصحة العامة في كيبيك أن ما بين واحد و 14 ساكنًا يعيشون في روين نوراندا “Rouyn-Noranda” كيبيك يمكن أن يصابوا بالسرطان بحلول عام 2060 إذا لم يقلل المصنع من انبعاثات الزرنيخ.
زار مدير الصحة العامة الدكتور لوك بويلو المدينة اليوم لمعالجة المخاوف بشأن المصنع، المملوك لشركة جلينكور متعددة الجنسيات والذي ينبعث منه 33 ضعف الحد الأقصى لمستوى الانبعاثات الذي حددته المقاطعة.
وقع حوالي 50 من المتخصصين الصحيين خطابًا مفتوحًا يوم الاثنين، يحثون فيه كيبيك على معالجة المستوى المرتفع لتلوث الهواء في المدينة الناجم عن المسبك الذي يعمل منذ عام 1927.
اقترح رئيس الوزراء كيبيك فرانسوا لوغو يوم الثلاثاء أن المصنع قد يغلق إذا لم يتمكن من تقليل الانبعاثات.
لكن رئيس الوزراء قال إنه يريد أيضًا الحفاظ على مئات “الوظائف ذات الأجور الجيدة” في المنطقة.
