كندا لايف – يقول وزير المالية البريطاني الجديد ناظم الزهاوي، إن صعوده من “صبي مهاجر” إلى القائم على خزانة البلاد يظهر مدى عظمة بريطانيا.
وعُين الزهاوي وزيرا للمالية في وقت متأخر يوم الثلاثاء بعد سلسلة من الاستقالات الوزارية احتجاجا على رئيس الوزراء بوريس جونسون، شملت استقالة وزير المالية السابق ريشي سوناك.
وقال الزهاوي لراديو إل.بي.سي “لا أكاد أصدق نفسي كل صباح عندما أفكر في الفرصة التي أتاحها هذا البلد لصبي مهاجر ولد في بغداد. إنه بلد عظيم حقا”.
والزهاوي (55 عاما) عضو قديم في حزب المحافظين الحاكم، وولد في العراق وانتقل إلى بريطانيا عندما فرت عائلته الكردية من حكم صدام حسين في منتصف السبعينيات.
وقال الزهاوي “لقد كانت رحلة لا تصدق. جئت إلى هذا البلد في سن الحادية عشرة، ولم أكن أستطيع التحدث بكلمة واحدة إنجليزية. أنا الآن وزير المالية لهذا البلد العظيم ومكلف بالإشراف على الاقتصاد”.
ويتولى الزهاوي إدارة اقتصاد البلاد الذي يواجه ارتفاع معدلات التضخم وأسعار الطاقة، وأزمة تكاليف المعيشة وضغوطا لخفض الضرائب من أجل مساعدة الأسر التي تعاني من الصعوبات.
وقبل توليه منصبه الجديد، كان الزهاوي وزيرا للتعليم، بعد أن نال إشادة خلال دوره السابق كوزير مسؤول عن طرح لقاحات كوفيد-19 في عام 2020.
